Version 2, in force from 6 October 2026. What Punksville keeps about you, why, for how long, who else handles it, and what you can ask of us. Plain words on purpose: if anything here is unclear, ask us (Contact, at the end).

The short version

  • Browsing needs no account. There are no ads and no ad trackers on Punksville, and no analytics script runs in your browser. Our host counts visits on its own servers (Who else handles data).
  • Your wallet address is the main thing the town knows about you. It is public on the chain, but it is still personal data, so we treat it with care.
  • We never sell anything about you, and we never ask for your seed phrase or keys.

Who looks after your data

The operators of Punksville decide what is kept and why. Reach them through the contact form or on X at @oracleofmemes (Contact, at the end).

What stays on your device

Your browser keeps your settings and progress so the town remembers them. They stay in your browser's own storage and you can clear them there at any time. The demo's practice lives only here.

Kept until you clear them (local storage):

  • punksville:soundSound on or off.
  • punksville:musicMusic on or off.
  • punksville:weight-unitKilograms or pounds, if you chose.
  • punksville:tipsThe tips you have seen, so they are not shown again.
  • punksville:turnWhich way you turn a phone for the sideways view.
  • punksville:emote-keys:Your quick emotes, for each wallet.
  • punksville:chat:muted:v1The wallets you muted in chat. Nobody is told, and the list is never sent anywhere.
  • punksville:well:The day you last made a wish at the Spirit Well, for each Punk, and the day its reminder was last shown.
  • punksville:loot:v1:Boxes opened, points and finds kept in this browser for each wallet (the demo's practice lives only here).
  • punksville:practice-holding:v1What the demo holds in practice.
  • punksville:street:v1:The demo's street name, title and what it shows.
  • punksville:face:v1:The demo's board face.
  • punksville:merge-gm:The demo's gm days.
  • punksville:wc-reportedThe month this browser last told the site that a wallet connected through WalletConnect.
  • wagmi.Which wallet you connected, kept by the wallet library.
  • wc@2:The WalletConnect session, kept by its library.

Gone when you close the tab (session storage):

  • punksville:demoThat you are in the demo.
  • punksville:youYour Punk on the street.
  • punksville:worldWhich world you are in.
  • punksville:zoneWhich street you are on.
  • punksville:walk-inThat you chose to walk in.
  • punksville:watchingThat you chose to just watch.
  • punksville:turnedThat the town is turned for the sideways view.
  • punksville:portalWhere you stood at the Portal.
  • punksville:go-thereA street you asked to go to.
  • punksville:came-from-townThe place you came from, to take you back.
  • punksville:explorer-returnWhere you were on a list, to take you back.
  • punksville.nearMiss.How a box's reel has been dressed in this tab.

Once you sign in, one cookie keeps your session (__Host-punksville_loot on the live site): it proves your wallet signed in, the page's scripts cannot read it, it goes only to Punksville, and it ends after 30 days, when you sign out, or when you sign in on another device (one session per wallet). It is the only cookie.

When you connect a wallet

  • Connecting shares your wallet's public address with the site. It never signs anything.
  • We read public chain data about that address (the Punks, Artifacts and Spirits it holds, and its ENS name if it has one) through Ethereum data providers.
  • If you connect from a phone browser, the connection runs through WalletConnect's relay.

Walking in town

When you walk your Punk on the live street, everyone on the same street sees your Punk, its name tag, where it walks and what it does. The live service carries that while you are there, and is given your wallet address and your Punk's number as your name on the street.

The town keeps the day and the minute you were last in town, with your wallet address, until you turn it off, and a list of who was in town today and yesterday (older lists are deleted). Other people are told only the day, never the minute. Turn off "Show when I'm in town" and your Punk still walks, but you are left out of the lists of who is here, no new mark is written, your mark is deleted and you leave today's list.

What the town keeps with your wallet

Your progress in town is kept with your wallet address: points, opened boxes, stamps, honours, catches, gm days, your place on the boards, your street name, the title you wear and what you put On show. It is kept for as long as the town runs, because it is your progress. You can ask us to remove your street name, title and On show at any time. Records that keep the town fair, such as which boxes were opened, stay with the address; ask us and we tell you exactly what they are.

Chat, reports and messages

  • Chat lines: never their words, unless someone reports one. For 15 minutes after a line is said we keep a sealed fingerprint of it (not the words), with the wallet, the street and the time, so a report of it can be checked. Then it is deleted.
  • Reported lines, mutes and bans: as the Terms of use say (What we keep): a reported case for 6 months after its decision, a mute for 6 months after it ends, a ban while it stands and for 6 months after. The operators' log of exports of cases (who, when, how many, which format, never what) is kept for a year.
  • Bug reports: what you write and what goes with it (where in the town you say it happened, the page, the site's build, your screen size and browser, whether you were in the demo, your wallet if you are signed in, what had failed if you sent it from a Report this, how many times the same failure was reported, and the picture of the town only if you tick the box). Kept until an operator closes the report, then for 180 days, then deleted.
  • Messages to the operators: what you write, the way to answer you if you leave one, and your wallet if you are signed in. Kept until we have answered it and for one year after, then deleted.
  • Copies: the operators may export a moderation case, a bug report or a message and keep a copy where they need it, for example to answer a review or a legal request.

Counters and fingerprints

To keep the site fair and stop floods, the town keeps a few small records for a short time. None holds any words:

  • how many reports, messages, lines or other requests you sent in the last minute, hour or day, in a record named by your network address or your wallet: deleted once its window is over, so never kept longer than a day;
  • for chat, your pace (how many lines you may say now) and a sealed fingerprint of your last line, so a repeat of it can be told: deleted 15 minutes after your last line;
  • for bug reports, a sealed fingerprint of each text and failed state you sent in the last hour, so a repeat can be told and the same failure folded into one report: deleted an hour after your last report.
  • for an action the server refused because the chain could not be read (opening a box, a fishing cast, the Harbour Office), the time, your wallet, the route and which read failed (never a message or anything you wrote), so a bug report about it can be read against what the server saw: deleted 30 days after.

The site has no clock of its own that deletes things, so each of these is deleted by the requests that come after its time is up, from anyone, as the site is used. A record past its time is never counted against you again.

Who else handles data

These services see what they need to do their part, and act for the site or as the services you chose:

  • Netlify hosts the site and its storage. It keeps short technical logs of requests and of the site's own log lines (which never hold what you write in chat, reports or messages), and its web analytics counts visits on its own servers (pages, where from, a rough place, and unique visitors by network address) for 7 days. Nothing of it runs in your browser.
  • Ably carries the live street and chat while you are in town. It is given your wallet address and your Punk's number as your name on the street, and passes lines on as they are said. A chat line is not kept there.
  • WalletConnect relays a wallet connection from a phone browser, and its connect window loads its list of wallets from its own service.
  • Ethereum data providers (an RPC provider and Blockscout, a public chain index) answer the site's questions about the chain. Your browser may ask the RPC provider directly.
  • IPFS gateways serve the collections' images and videos to our server, which passes them on to you, so your browser does not contact them.

Links to OpenSea, Etherscan, X, Discord and others take you to their own sites and their own rules.

Why we keep it

To run the town you asked for (your progress, your session, the live street), to keep it safe and fair (limits, reports, moderation), to fix what breaks (bug reports), to answer you (messages), and where the law requires it (a threat to someone's life goes to the police).

Your rights

You can ask us what we keep about you, to correct it, to delete it, to limit how we use it, to object, or to have it in a file. Write to us through the contact form or at the contact below, from or naming your wallet; we answer within a month. You can also complain to the data protection authority where you live.

Age

Punksville is for people 18 or older (Terms of use).

Changes

When we change this page in a way that matters, we say so here, with the date and what changed, before the change applies.

Version 2, 6 October 2026: a reported line, a mute and a ban's record are now kept for 6 months, so you can ask for a review for as long as the law asks. We now say that, for an action the server refused because the chain could not be read, we keep a short failure record for 30 days.
